“Esta é a hora dos monstros” (This is the time for monsters) is Julia Debasse’s first solo show at Portas Vilaseca Galeria. Featuring a text by curator and art critic Clarissa Diniz, the exhibition presents the artist’s most recent production in painting, bringing together mirages and distortions between science and folklore, between nature and culture. It is in this twilight that the monsters arise.
In addition to the figures and extraordinary situations of her paintings, it is also in its formal aspects that Debasse’s work sustains the hallucinatory dimension of the project to invent not only monsters, but also the historicity of the very idea of beasts, mythical creatures or images we invent for beings we could not meet. In this way, the flatness of her figurative scenery, the indelicate saturation of colors, the rush of chromatic transitions, the use of pictorial solutions more common to mural found in bars than to the fine arts realm, the use of pizza boxes or plywood as surfaces for her works and the exploration of a saturated palette not only safeguard the artist’s intention of non-belief but, more than that, they point to the aesthetic, historical and political contingency of her monstrous imagery.
Her figures do not rescue or light up our current twilight: they inhabit it. They are creatures from transitioning worlds that resist. They offer their fictious existence as a weapon against other proto-fascist and venomous fables taken from politically motivated fake news.
The show runs until 14 August and visiting times (by appointment only and following all WHO protocols) are: Tuesdays to Fridays, 11 am – 7 pm | and Saturdays, 11 am – 5 pm.
