Portas Vilaseca is pleased to present “DOGMA”, Arthur Palhano’s new solo show, on display until March, 18th.
Taking up three floors of the gallery space in Botafogo, the exhibition is curated by Clarissa Diniz and brings together works that the Rio de Janeiro-born and São Paulo-based artist has been developing over the last three years, crossing different languages, themes and periods.
The works also reveal some of the main interests and procedures of Palhano’s practice. This is the case, for example, of the presence of different instances of the “icon”, to which Palhano dedicates himself with the intention of approaching the ways in which an icon is socially and aesthetically produced and celebrated, but also profaned, challenged, deconstructed. In this investigation, he evokes the history of art, Christianity and the school, making a critique that is as aesthetic as it is political to the ways in which we fictionalize our adoration, beliefs and judgments.
The exhibition presents works that deepen the presence of life, death, time and (im)permanence in the artist’s path. To this end, it brings together unpublished drawings and paintings around the genre of still life, as well as works in virtual reality and appropriations.
“DOGMA” is a unique opportunity to get in touch with the work of this artist who both reveres and confronts the canonical history of art and his own position within it, in order to circumscribe aesthetic-political issues that cross times and spaces, while remaining present.
This is what the gallery walls themselves enunciate, welcoming the same gesture of prospecting, peeling and cuts that marks part of Palhano’s recent paintings, spiraling time and bringing, to our eyes and perceptions, indexes of memories that we thought buried.
