Portas Vilaseca Galeria takes part in the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair – Marrakech from 8 to 11 February, in partnership with Spanish gallery Reiners Contemporary Art. Together, the two galleries have developed a curatorial project that highlights the works of three Brazilian artists: Kika Carvalho, Mulambö and Éder Oliveira.
Mulambö presents “Noite do Destino” (Night of Destiny), a new series of eight small-format paintings that delve into the Muslim influence on black resistance struggles in Brazil. With this new body of work, the artist seeks to capture an almost erased historical record, giving the canvases a ghostly nuance, as if the figures and events were reappearing from the shadows of time – an invitation to a deeper reflection on collective memory and the fundamental role of art in resurrecting narratives that deserve to be remembered.
Kika Carvalho, meanwhile, is exhibiting two medium format canvases that point to a desire to reclaim her own imagery and trajectory in the history of painting, through an accurate technique and a refined palette of colours. Her intimate poetics are crossed by issues involving the construction of the individual based on cultural references and also the processes of identifying what it is to be a black person in contemporary times.
Finally, Éder Oliveira presents four large-scale canvases that shed light on contemporary issues such as violence in Latin American countries and the dialectic of social classes. His paintings mix dramatic and seductive elements with a stark representation of some nuances of the civilisational malaise.
