MANO PENALVA OPENS “FORRÓ” AT RIBEIRÃO PRETO ART MUSEUM

This Friday, the 9th, artist Mano Penalva opens a new solo show, this time at MARP – Ribeirão Preto Art Museum, as part of the programme for the 49th SARP – National-Contemporary Ribeirão Preto Art Salon.

The title of the exhibition, “Forró“, refers to the Brazilian musical style traditionally danced in pairs, reflecting the way the works are presented in the show – around 10 pieces that explore interaction in pairs and the ideas of reproducibility and mirroring, both between objects and in relation to space.

Featuring a critical text by Osmar Porto, “Forró” is on view until 26 October.

About the artist – With a keen eye, Mano Penalva delves into the heart of everyday life, displacing objects from their usual context and reflecting on the material culture and the social interactions within different spaces. His ability to explore multiple forms of expression in different techniques and media is visible in each work or proposition, allowing the public to contemplate new aesthetic combinations and also rethink their relationship with the world. The core of the artist’s research lies in his close observation of the universe that moves around the house and the street, between domestic life and the public sphere. In this context, we identify an interest in popular gestures and traditions, disused manufactures, household ornaments and the improvisations of informal capitalism. Based on rigorous field research, Penalva delves into the depths of social dynamics to extract visual metaphors in geometric exercises, which are in open dialogue with the history of Brazilian art, especially with the teachings from the concrete and neoconcrete movements.
