AYRSON HERÁCLITO IN THE TBA21 THYSSEN-BORNEMISZA COLLECTION ART CONTEMPORARY

We are happy to announce the acquisition of two works by Brazilian artist Ayrson Heráclito by TBA21 Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary.

The sculpture Juntó – Abebé com Ferro de Ogum (2024) and the video Sacudimentos – O encontro das margens do Atlântico (2015) are now part of the Foundation’s collection, which is based in Madrid and works in conjunction with the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, as well as other important spaces in Venice and Jamaica.

Over the last 20 years, TBA21 has established a renowned collection of more than 700 contemporary artworks by nearly 200 artists from around the world. At the same time, it has developed a series of exhibition and commissioning projects, the most recent being the Ecologies of Peace exhibition. The second part of this show will open on 27 September at the C3A Centro de Creación Contemporánea de Andalucía. Featuring around 50 works from the collection, including Heráclito’s new acquisitions, the exhibition highlights the transformative role of both ancestral knowledge and new contemporary rituals in addressing historical and current injustices.

In his Juntó series, Heráclito explores insignias and tools linked to the Candomblé pantheon, engaging in a dialogue with the idea of the conjunction of entities that govern us. In the video, performative ‘shaking’ actions exorcise two historic buildings—located on opposite shores of the Atlantic—of their colonial and slave-owning past: the Casa da Torre in Bahia, Brazil; and the Maison des Esclaves (House of Slaves) on the island of Gorée, Senegal.
