“The Theater of Terror,” the latest solo show by artist Ismael Monticelli, is currently on view at the Museu Nacional da República in Brasília. With a text by Raphael Fonseca, the exhibition delves into the events of January 8, 2023, establishing a dialogue with Futurism—an early 20th-century avant-garde movement known for its association with fascism. The show specifically references the works of Italian artist Fortunato Depero, created in the 1920s.
Monticelli’s installation spans 30 meters of the museum’s mezzanine and portrays a scene of conflict, featuring life-size human figures painted with acrylics on open, cut-out cardboard boxes.
The artist explores the theatricality and media-driven nature of the attempted coup against the Democratic Rule of Law, intertwining violence and destruction with elements of celebration and festivity. The work prompts a deep reflection on the complexity of these contemporary events.
This project has been awarded a grant by Funarte | Retomada – Visual Arts 2023 and is supported by Portas Vilaseca Galeria.
On view until November 24. Don’t miss it!
