The sculpture “Fortuna“, by Zé Carlos Garcia, is one of the highlights of the group show “Ainda Viva” (Still Alive), which brings together works by 19 Brazilian and Latin American artists curated by Bruna Costa and Paula Borghi. This exhibition is part of the III Exhibition Cycle at Casa de Cultura do Parque, on view until February 2025.
“Ainda Viva” offers a reinterpretation of the still-life genre, a historic form of art dating back to Ancient Greece and the concept of “vanitas”. This term, of biblical origin, translates to “vanity of vanities” and is associated with images that critique human frivolity, using symbols to highlight the fragility of life and the insignificance of material possessions in the face of death.
In “Fortuna“, Garcia combines wood from urban pruning with fragments of furniture to create a type of amulet/offering that evokes wishes for abundance and good fortune. The composition includes fresh red fruits that, as they release their juice, carve grooves and stain the piece, leaving organic marks that continue to transform over time.
