Brazilian artist Íris Helena has been selected to participate in the Gasworks residency programme, in London, from 8 April – 24 June 2024.
With a solid career spanning more than a decade, Íris investigates the traces of the urban landscape, translated into a sui generis poetics of (re)construction of memory. Her works materialize when the image meets its material support – often precarious and ordinary. This encounter is intrinsically associated with risk, instability and a craving for erasure, which gives her production deep and complex layers of meaning.
During the residency period, the artist intends to research the so-called Cotton Cycle – based in Paraíba, her home state, in the 18th century – and its connections with the former British Empire.
The gallery below highlights some of the artist’s key works. To learn more about her research and practice, check her profile page.
Congratulations, Iris!
