Portas Vilaseca is pleased to present ‘Dreming Dashes’, artist Ana Hupe‘s new solo exhibition, curated by Juliana Gontijo.
The opening event takes place this following Thursday, Aug 1, starting at 7 pm. ‘Dreming Dashes‘ will be on show until 6 September. Visiting times are: Tuesdays to Fridays (11 am – 7 pm) and Saturdays (11 am – 5 pm). Admission is free.
Featuring around 40 works spread over the gallery’s three floors, the exhibition addresses themes such as immanence and transcendence, the mystique of forms, extractive violence and revolutionary movements. These reflections are presented through silk-screens, fabrics, embroidery, found objects and photograms, all arranged in an instalative setup.
According to curator Juliana Gontijo, “each work presented is a story born from an encounter with a sign or with the silence between the lines of a text, in order to compose with experiences that the artist discovers on each of her journeys. Between the stone and the sky, we find entangled triangular colonial relations between Brazil, West Africa and Europe – in particular Germany, the country where the artist lives and works. Hupe uses critical fabulation as a methodological guide, a process that links historical research to the ‘power to invent’, as the writer Saidiya Hartman puts it, and thus tell aspects of the lives of forgotten people and facts, opening up paths for historical reparations beyond the object itself’.
