This Saturday, 7 August, Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR) inaugurates “YORÙBÁIANO”, the first solo exhibition of our represented artist Ayrson Heráclito at the Rio de Janeiro-based museum.
Curated by Marcelo Campos and Amanda Bonan, the exhibition presents an important part of Heráclito’s production over the last 25 years and occupies two galleries in the museum’s exhibition pavilion with works in various media, such as photographs, videos, installations and objects.
On the opening day, admission will be free from 12 to 5:15 pm. At 12:00, the performance “Inner Secrets” will take place in one of the exhibition rooms, in which a black performer stages issues related to the trauma of slavery. At 2 pm, the iconic performance “Bori” takes place, in which the artist himself performs a ritual of feeding the head with the participation of 6 musicians and 12 actors.
Focusing his research and practice on elements of Afro-Brazilian culture and its connections between Africa and the diaspora in America, Ayrson Heráclito represents the great poetic and political reinvention of a “Yoruban Brazil”. A visual artist, curator, professor and PhD in Communication and Semiotics from PUC-SP, he explores in his works themes such as the oil palm, life in Colonial Brazil, sugar, sperm, blood, the body and pain, as well as raptures, apartheids and dreams of freedom.
“YORÙBÁIANO” has the support of Portas Vilaseca Galeria and runs until November 2021. Don’t miss it!
