Arriving today, another publication in our virtual library ! Take a look at the catalogue of artist Mano Penalva’s exhibition “Casa de Andar” (Two-Storey House), which took place at Portas Vilaseca Galeria in 2019. The title of the show refers to an expression that is commonly used in Bahia, the birthplace of Penalva in Brazil, to refer to houses with more than one storey, the so-called ‘sobrados’, or two-storey houses. According to Pollyana Quintela, who wrote the curatorial text, the meaning built by the artist is reinforced in the galley space (a three-storey house) and invites the public to walk up the stairs and experience a certain household ambiguity. “Casa de Andar” comprises a set of works that produce strange sensations based on the language of the “Brazilian household”, its recollections and traditions. Besides the critical essay, the publication (bilingual – in Portuguese and English) also brings a comprehensive photographic documentation of the show.
