The Museum Afro Brasil Emanoel Araujo, an institution of the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of the State of São Paulo, inaugurates the 2023 Exhibition Program with the show Bará, by Minas Gerais artist Gustavo Nazareno, his first solo exhibition at a large institution in Brazil, on displau from May, 13th – Oct, 1st. The accomplishment is highlighted in the first set of temporary exhibitions after the death of the institution’s founder and curator, Emanoel Araujo, with whom the exhibition was signed personally in 2021.
Curated by Deri Andrade, the show brings together around 130 works, including oil paintings on linen and charcoal drawings, reflecting the artist’s most recent research. In 2019, Gustavo conceived the series of charcoal drawings called Bará, as a ceremony in the form of an offering to a quality of Exu – Elegbara. Based on his inspirations for fairy tales, fables, and his faith in Exu, the artist presents, through the drawings, “a fable that runs through the day this ceremony took place, a Monday, within a world created for the Orisha”. The artist proposes that “the visitor becomes a guest in this world that I create, going through the phases of the day and characteristics of the space portrayed in painting and charcoal drawings”.
Deri Andrade observes that the bases of this exhibition are Gustavo’s particular painting and drawing technique, which starts from a Renaissance reference and his interest in the epistemologies of the Orishas. “In addition to a religious issue, Gustavo Nazareno imagines images that tell a story from the fables he writes, having as a starting point referencing these entities, with respect and great beauty, building a new imagery for them”, concludes the curator.
