Ikon Gallery – an important art space located in Birmingham, England – inaugurates the exhibition “Horror in the Modernist Block“, which brings together 20 contemporary artists with new works that explore the relationship between modern architecture and the horror genre.
In fiction and film, high-rise towers, concrete estates and glass pavilions form the backdrop to terrifying stories of dystopias. Within this context, the show takes Birmingham as its starting point, a city renowned for its brutalist architecture. The works displayed are in dialogue with the architecture of Ikon’s neo-Gothic building and associate horror metaphors with the influence of modernist design and the real violence of its construction and destruction.
Brazilian artist Ismael Monticelli – represented by Portas Vilaseca Galeria – participates with the installation “Spaghetti Junction“, which draws parallels between legacies of brutalism in Birmingham and Brasília, the federal capital of Brazil designed by Oscar Niemeyer.
Conceived as a wall installation, the work comprises paintings and sculptures, and contains historical references to medieval bestiaries, labyrinthine highways and Egyptian pyramids.
“Horror in the Modernist Block” is on display until April 2023.
