Opening to the public this Thursday (7th) at the Eva Klabin House Museum is Kika Carvalho‘s new solo show – “Ultramar”.
Curated by Lucas Albuquerque, the exhibition brings together around 20 works – including new ones – among paintings, cyanotypes, installations and collages developed from the artist’s in-depth research into the color blue and its role in material, historical and social relations over the centuries.
“Ultramar” is the result of a partnership between the Eva Klabin House Museum and the Inclusartiz Institute, through the “Éden” artist residency program, which aims to investigate the house and the collection resulting from Eva Klabin’s (1903-1991) eight decades of collecting. With one of the most important collections of classical art in Brazil, spanning almost 50 centuries, the union of the two institutions is based on the desire to invite contemporary artists to promote new perceptions within the house and the collection through the creation of new works, based on research carried out in conjunction with the curatorial and museological teams.
For the curator, the opportunity to work with the Eva Klabin House Museum collection allows him to think of curatorial and research projects capable of moving contemporary production to other places of significance, broadening the dialog between times and the critical fortune of the invited artists.
“Carvalho’s work was chosen precisely for this reason: to reveal data inherent to her interest in poetic research, which is sometimes suppressed by the speed of everyday life. In this sense, the period of research with such a rich collection establishes other times, both of production and perception, which the artist, in turn, aims to subvert in her occupation. To promote new readings not only of the present, but also of the past, in a spiral of thought,” points out Lucas.
“Ultramar” features works deeply influenced by the artist’s experience in Luanda, the capital of Angola, where she took part in an artist residency programme in 2022 – her first time crossing the Atlantic. For this exhibition, Carvalho has also prepared new works that reflect her experimentation with techniques other than painting, such as cyanotype and analog photography processes. These works also propose a confrontation between the symbolic use of the color blue in ancient Egypt and its later appreciation in Christian sacred imagery, through direct dialogue with items in the Eva Klabin House Museum collection.
With the institutional support of Portas Vilaseca Galeria, the exhibition runs until February 2024. Don’t miss it!
