Rio de Janeiro’s Caixa Cultural will reopen to the public, on Rua do Passeio, featuring the group show “Passeio Público“, conceived especially for the space’s new venue, in the city centre. Curated by Carolina Rodrigues, Daniela Name and Paula de Oliveira Camargo, the exhibition brings together 18 artists from different generations and languages, who present works in connection with the surrounding garden, designed by Master Valentim in the 18th century and which underwent successive renovations, demolitions and abandonment.
Mano Penalva and Zé Carlos Garcia participate in the show exhibiting new works (see gallery below). Penalva presents the work “Bibelot“, which displays dozens of translucent glass birds on a kind of street vendor table covered with a blue plastic canvas. On the other hand, Garcia presents 6 hand-carved wood sculptures that refer to Valentim’s baroque iconography and also to his own bestiary of hybrid bodies. “Caninana” suggests a symbol of infinity in the exhibition space, in dialogue with the proposal of time unfolded between memories and imaginations, highlighted by the curators. With feathers on its head, the snake also evokes the Tupinambá ancestry in the surrounding area.
