Participating in another exhibition abroad, our represented artist Mulambö presents his series “G.R.E.S” at the collective show “SWEAT”, on display until January 2022 at Haus Der Kunst, in Munich (Germany).
Curated by Anna Schneider and Raphael Fonseca, the exhibition is dedicated to the phenomenon of bodies that work together and shape the present. “Sweating” in the face of violent attempts to control the human body represents an artistic strategy of resistance. As we witness a global escalation of systemic injustice, there is also a strong growth in transnational resistance movement alliances.
“SWEAT” brings together more than 20 artistic voices – among them Isaac Julian, Tschabalala Self, Daniel Lind Ramos and António Ole – who respond to several conditions of political pressure. The artistic positions range from presentday to pioneering works from the 1970s and ‘80s that mobilised feminist and postcolonial movements in art and society. Through the use of dynamic media such as dance, film and video, practices of non-hierarchical recycling, collaging, and sampling of collective and personal imagery, they postulate worlds as vital assemblages of multiple cultural influences and temporalities, disrupting biased mainstream narratives and representations.
Occupying a 10-meter wall in the exhibition space, Mulambö brings together 100 cardboard paintings that bring an intimate and personal view on Carnival and samba, from the perspective of those who embody the “pavilion” (a samba school “habitat”) – G.R.E.S. is a series in process, from which the artist has been building the memory of a samba school that is not meant to be a specific one, but all of them.
