After being presented in other museums, such as MAMAM in Recife (PE, Brazil), Mano Penalva‘s solo show “Sala de Estar” [ Living Room ] opens at the Museu Mineiro, in Belo Horizonte (MG, Brazil), as part of the 22nd National Museum Week Program. Curated by Wagner Nardy, the exhibition brings together works from various series developed by Penalva over the years, including “Ventanas,” “Brasões,” and “Alpendre.”
The idea is to invite the public into a domestic setting, albeit within a museum, establishing a connection between the familiar, which already holds recognition in the popular imagination, and a new poetic realm. According to Nardy, the showcased works explore this transitional space, “blurring the lines between so-called erudite and popular art, intimacy and public space, artistic expression and the domestic sphere, and indoor and outdoor realms“.
A new addition to this show is a piece created exclusively for the Minas Gerais institution, part of an ongoing series titled “Branquinhas,” inspired by seven shades of cachaça.
“I’ve prepared this exhibition with great enthusiasm to showcase my work in Minas Gerais, as it holds a personal significance for me, much like Bahia, my hometown. I’m eager to hear the public’s feedback on this exhibition,” says the artist.
