A new cultural center has just been opened in Rio de Janeiro’s downtown area. Guided by a visual arts-driven programme, the PGE-RJ Cultural Center – located in the former space of the Carmo Monastery (opposite Praça XV) – opens its doors to the public with the collective show “Composição Carioca”, curated by Cecília Fortes.
The exhibition brings together contemporary artists from different generations and backgrounds who see the city of Rio and its inhabitants as the reason and inspiration for many of their creations.
Among the works selected for the show, we highlight “Quieto”, by our represented artist Mulambö (see gallery below).
This painting on wood presents a mysterious and ambiguous figure, which is revealed in an enigmatic way through the shining golden strips used as additional material. According to the artist, the work alludes to festivals and popular manifestations as means of resistance and tools for transmission of knowledge.
“Composição Carioca” is on display until August and visiting times are: Tues to Sat, from 10 am to 6 pm ✨
