Portas Vilaseca and M+B galleries are pleased to present “Juri“, Pedro Neves‘ first solo show in the USA, which opens this Saturday (20th) in Los Angeles. Both galleries have joined forces in a collaborative project to promote the work of the Brazilian artist among the North American public.
The show brings together 12 large-scale paintings – a result of Neves’ most recent research into the role of traditional knowledge in preserving native ecosystems in contrast to intricate and gloomy narratives from the colonial past. The critical text is signed by curator and art educator Thiago de Paula Souza.
With a new body of works, the artist seeks to build a visual archive based on his family’s legacy, from personal documents, stories shared by his mother and objects of remembrance. He is also interested in creating a visual repertoire capable of generating images that go beyond those established by dominant narratives, emphasizing a harmonious connection with ancestral traditions.
From another perspective, Neves revisits an intriguing episode that originated in the social experiment plotted by German botanists and explorers Spix and Martius in the 17th century in colonial Brazil, when two young indigenous people – Juri and Isabella – were transplanted from the tropics to Munich.
“Juri” will run until February, 17.
