The exhibition “Acts of Revolt: Other Imaginaries About Independence” is on display at the Modern Art Museum (MAM) in Rio de Janeiro. The show reflects on the bicentennial of Brazil’s Independence, approaching different views of the country outlined at that point – in consonance with a series of insurrections that happened in the period.
In collaboration wirth artist Giseli Vasconcelos, Pedro Victor Brandão has developed the comissioned work “Nheenga Cabana“, a project based on the archives of Pará-based journalist and sociologist Lúcio Flávio Pinto about the Cabanagem revolt. The reading stations – positioned in various places throughout the show – present images of the uprising generated by machine learning processes with artificial intelligence from text entries (prompts) taken from Lúcio’s archives, which raises a reflection on memory, technology and agency. There is also a free distribution of a special edition of Jornal Pessoal, Lucio’s independent publication that circulated for more than 30 years in Pará.
The show is curated by Beatriz Lemos, Keyna Eleison, Pablo Lafuente and Thiago de Paula Souza. It runs until February 23. Don’t miss it!
