From 2 to 6 December, Portas Vilaseca Galeria participates in the art fair Untitled, Art – Miami Beach — this year taking place virtually through the Artland platform. In this edition, we present the most recent production in painting by our represented artist No Martins.
Born in 1987, in Sao Paulo, Brazil (where he lives and works), No Martins is one of the most promising artists of his generation. His practice moves through painting, performance, installation and experimentation with objects, and it is based on research on interpersonal relationships in everyday life amid issues such as racism, police violence and mass incarceration.
In the last ten years, he has been participating in solo and collective shows in Brazil and abroad. Among them, we highlight the collective exhibition “Afro-Atlantic Stories”, which took place in 2018 at MASP – Museu de Arte de São Paulo and Tomie Ohtake Institute. It was picked by The New York Times as one of the best art shows that year. Most recently, in 2019, the artist was awarded the Sesc Contemporary Art Prize, for his participation in the 21st Contemporary Art Biennial Sesc_VideoBrasil, in which he presented the series “#JaBasta!”, a set of paintings reflecting on the police violence and on the criminalization of the black young population living in the outskirts of large cities in Brazil. His first solo exhibition in the United Kingdom took place at the Jack Bell Gallery last July.
The paintings of No Martins are linked to the history of portrait art and they also carry an urgent message against racism and inequality. At Untitled, Art – Miami Beach 2020, the artist brings together new works that are part of the series “Encontros Políticos”, “Contrariando as estatísticas”, “Signos Sociais” and “Mãe Preta”.
Don’t miss our Viewing Room between 2 and 6 December at Artland.
