On Thursday, 5th May, Portas Vilaseca opens the exhibition “Alpendre”, artist Mano Penalva’s second solo show at the gallery.
The exhibition brings together a set of new works, including objects and installations, which evoke the artist’s research and practice in relation to the use of everyday elements in new contexts. Penalva proposes new aesthetic arrangements based on his own experiences of collecting stories and on the observation of the field between the Home and the Street.
The critical text, written by curator and writer Tiago de Abreu Pinto as an essay with a prose tone, moves through history, architecture and cinema as an intimate dialogue that proposes reflections on the rituals associated with the house, promoting a physical connection with the symbolic and the sacred.
Alpendre (in English, “Porch“) is a place of passage that establishes a level between the interior and exterior space of a residence, functioning as a transitory point of reflection and gaze. According to Abreu Pinto, it can also be understood as a climate zone where we pass from a private shade to a social clarity, or vice versa. The exhibition’s proposal invites the viewer to experience the “porch-structure” at architectural and bodily levels.
