Lives and works in Teresópolis, RJ, Brazil
In her work, Julia Debasse explores narratives that combine references to “low” and “high” culture. Through painting and drawing, and using various supports—including cardboard, plywood, and other unusual objects found in everyday life—the artist seeks to erase the supposed boundaries between these realms. In her most recent work, she has been bringing together extraordinary figures and situations that confirm the hallucinatory dimension of her storytelling project.
Recent solo exhibitions include: “Esta é a hora dos monstros” (“This Is the Time of Monsters”), with a critical text by Clarissa Diniz, Portas Vilaseca Galeria, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil (2021); “Altar,” Artur Fidalgo Gallery, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil (2019); ‘Vila dos Mistérios – Projeto Technô,” curated by Alberto Saraiva, Oi Futuro Flamengo, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil (2016); “Ao Meu Prezado Predador” (“To My Dear Predator”), curated by Marcos Chaves, Artur Fidalgo Gallery, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil (2014).
Among the group exhibitions, highlights include: “Aglomeração Antônio Henrique Amaral,” curated by Paulo Miyada, Instituto Tomie Ohtake, São Paulo, SP, Brazil (2020); “Unifor Plástica XX,” curated by Denise Mattar, Unifor Cultural Center, Fortaleza, CE, Brazil (2019); “Mulher, Vírgula,” curated by Cecília Bedê, Dragão do Mar Cultural Center, Fortaleza, CE, Brazil (2018); “A luz que vela o corpo é a mesma que revela a tela” (“The Light That Veils the Body is the Same That Reveals the Canvas”), curated by Bruno Miguel, Caixa Cultural Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil (2017); “Ficções” (“Fictions”), curated by Daniela Name, Caixa Cultural Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil (2015); and “Figura Humana” (“Human Figure”), curated by Raphael Fonseca, Caixa Cultural Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil (2014).
Her works are part of important institutional collections in Brazil, including: Pinacoteca do Ceará (Fortaleza, CE), MAC – Museu Dragão do Mar (Fortaleza, CE), and Inhotim (Brumadinho, MG).

“Esta é a hora dos monstros” (This is the time for monsters) is Julia Debasse’s first solo show at Portas Vilaseca Galeria. Featuring a text by curator and art critic Clarissa Diniz, the exhibition presents the artist’s most recent production in painting, bringing together mirages and distortions between science and folklore, between nature and culture. It is in this twilight that the monsters arise.
