Portas Vilaseca was founded in 2010 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as a space dedicated to experimentation in contemporary art, closely aligned with the emerging art scene. Since then, it has established itself as a platform that fosters dialogue between influential voices and rising artists from Latin America and beyond. Initially located within a traditional frame shop, the gallery moved in 2018 to a three-storey house in Botafogo, a neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro’s South Zone. This new space has hosted exhibitions, public programmes, performances, and talks, always in collaboration with artists and independent curators engaged in relevant debates. Situated in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, Portas Vilaseca maintains a strong connection to its local context while also operating internationally through art fairs and institutional partnerships. Over its 15-year trajectory, many of the gallery’s represented artists have gained international recognition, participating in major biennials such as the Venice Biennale, the São Paulo Biennial, and the Mercosul Biennial. Their works have been exhibited, commissioned, and acquired by major museums and institutions across the Americas and Europe, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, Museo Reina Sofía, Tate, MALBA, Inhotim, and the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, among others. Furthermore, Portas Vilaseca regularly takes part in major art fairs across Latin America, the United States, and Europe, including Art Basel Miami Beach, ARCO Madrid, Frieze London, ZONAMACO, ARTBO, and SP-Arte.
