Portas Vilaseca

Portas Vilaseca Galeria was founded in 2010 by Jaime Portas Vilaseca with the mission of supporting and promoting young artists within the contemporary art scene. Initially located inside a traditional framing shop, the gallery quickly became a meeting point for experimental practices and innovative discussions led by independent artists and curators. In 2018, it relocated to a three-story house in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro. While the ground floor features a classic exhibition layout, the upper floors are dedicated to experimental projects that interact with the building's unique spatial environment.
Portas Vilaseca's roster of artists offers a diverse perspective on contemporary art emerging from Latin America. Over its 15 years of activity, the gallery has also collaborated with more than 40 invited artists. The gallery’s program is committed to being a laboratory for experimentation, supporting projects developed by artists and curators. Prioritizing practices that blend poetic experimentation with urgent themes, the projects address issues such as anti-racism, queer and LGBTQIA+ issues, the climate crisis, and the intersection of art and new technologies. Additionally, the gallery frequently collaborates with institutions and independent spaces on innovative projects.
In recent years, the gallery has been working towards its internationalization, participating in prominent art fairs such as Art Basel (Miami), 1-54 (London), Arco (Madrid and Lisbon), SWAB (Barcelona), Untitled (Miami), Zonamaco (Mexico), ArtBO (Bogotá), ArteBA (Buenos Aires) and ArtLima (Peru).
Our represented artists are featured in major international biennials – including the São Paulo Biennial, Venice Biennial, Mercosul Biennial, SESC_Videobrasil Biennial. They are also participating in exhibitions at renowned institutions, including The Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum (Madrid/Spain), Haus der Kunst (Munich/Germany), Ikon (Birmingham/ UK), Kunstraum Innsbruck (Innsbruck/Austria), Galleria Nazionale de Rome (Rome/Italy), Pinacoteca de São Paulo (São Paulo/Brazil), Inhotim (Brumadinho/Brazil), São Paulo Museum of Art – MASP (São Paulo/Brazil), Instituto Moreira Salles (São Paulo/Brazil), Museu de Arte do Rio – MAR (Rio de Janeiro/Brazil), SESC (São Paulo/Brazil) and Museu Afro Brasil (São Paulo/Brazil).
