ARTIST SILVANA MENDES WILL TAKE PART IN THE II BIENNIAL OF THE AMAZON
SILVANA MENDES PARTICIPA DA II BIENAL DAS AMAZÔNIAS
08.06.2025

We are pleased to announce the participation of artist Silvana Mendes, represented by Portas Vilaseca, in the 2nd Biennial of the Amazon, which will take place from 29 August to 30 November 2025, in Belém, Pará.

Curated by Manuela Moscoso, the main exhibition of the Biennial — entitled Verde-distância — proposes a careful listening to pan-Amazonian and Caribbean territories, bringing together 74 artists and collectives whose practices engage with dreams, memory, and the struggle for belonging. The project draws inspiration from the legacy of the writer Benedicto Monteiro, author of Verde Vagomundo, and invites the public to experience the Amazon as a territory in flux and constant reinvention.

Silvana Mendes’s presence in this context highlights the relevance of her work, which is grounded in a deep investigation of identity and historical revisionism. In her Afetocolagens (affectionate collages), Mendes reinterprets archival photographs through intuitive erasures and subtle interventions, creating a poetic body of work that challenges hegemonic representations of Brazilian history. By reconstructing images and memories, the artist proposes speculative and affective narratives that confront historical erasure, opening space for a sensitive dialogue on reparation, collective memory, and social transformation.

The Biennial of the Amazon will be a unique opportunity to experience these propositions in a symbolic and politically complex territory.
