As part of the celebrations for Funarte‘s five-decade milestone, artist Marcone Moreira presents his installation “Vertebral” at the Mezzanine of the Palácio Gustavo Capanema. The work, featured in the group exhibition “Visualidades Brasileiras – Funarte 50 Anos” (Brazilian Visualities – Funarte 50 Years), curated by Luíza Interlenghi, is a synthesis of the research the artist has conducted over twenty years regarding displacement, landscape, and the material culture of the Amazonian nautical universe.
Composed of 300 aluminum propellers stretching approximately 9 meters, the installation evokes the sinuous movement of a large serpent. The pieces, originally used in boat engines in the Amazon, are acquired by Moreira from artisanal foundries that preserve the traditional sand-casting method.
By experimenting with different scales and the sculptural arrangement of these elements, the artist reveals the power of aquatic transportation and the complex human relationship with fluvial ecosystems. Influenced by his proximity to the Carajás Mine, his work tensions the boundaries between industrial waste, naval carpentry, and the transformation of matter.
Marcone Moreira’s participation in this exhibition celebrates a historic partnership: throughout his career, the artist has received seven Funarte awards, along with numerous invitations for projects that were decisive in his trajectory.
“Visualidades Brasileiras – Funarte 50 Anos” will be on display until May 15.
