Brazilian artist Kika Carvalho is participating in the exhibition Pluralidades Insulares: Latin American and Caribbean Art from the IDB Collection, on view at the Art Gallery of Centro Cultural Fiesp until July 5.
The exhibition marks the first time that the collection of the Inter-American Development Bank has been presented outside its headquarters in Washington, bringing together 157 works by artists from 26 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean. Among renowned names and emerging generations, Kika presents a painting created in 2021 that belongs to the Bank’s institutional collection. Her work is part of a group that reflects the diversity of languages and perspectives in Latin American production, engaging with themes such as abstraction, territory, and the construction of identities, while also reinforcing the role of women artists within the curatorial narrative conceived by Giancarlo Hannud and Julieta Maroni.
Organized into seven thematic sections, the exhibition proposes a non-linear reading of art produced in Latin America, embracing the multiple cultural “islands” that coexist across the continent. In this context, Kika Carvalho’s work is situated as part of a generation that expands the boundaries of representation and challenges traditional categories, contributing to a more plural and contemporary view of Latin American art.
