A multimedia artist with a particular interest in conducting meticulous, long-term research, focusing on the relationship between fiction, art, and history. Working from established narratives, Monticelli seeks to reorganize, rethink, and present them in new ways, revealing aspects that are not seen or are not easily perceived. His projects have led to propositions in various media, such as installations, photographs, objects, and videos, and more recently, paintings and sculptures.
Recent solo exhibitions include: “The Theater of Terror,” featuring texts by Raphael Fonseca and Clarissa Diniz, National Museum of the Republic, Brasília, DF, Brazil (2024), and Casa França-Brasil, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil (2025); “Overnone, Overnone in Chaos,” curated by Clarissa Diniz, Portas Vilaseca Galeria, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil (2022), among others.
Recent group exhibitions include: “Horror in The Modernist Block”, curated by Melanie Pocock, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, UK (2023); “Against Again: Art Under Attack in Brazil,” curated by Nathalia Lavigne and Tatiane Schilaro, Anya and Andrew Shiva Gallery, New York, USA (2020); “Lost and Found: Imagining New Worlds,” curated by Raphael Fonseca, Institute of Contemporary Arts – LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore (2019); “Molt Bé!”, curated by Raphael Fonseca, Portas Vilaseca Galeria, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil (2018), among others.
In 2019, he won the 7th Marcantonio Vilaça National Industry Award, the most prestigious award for active artists in Brazil, and was awarded the ProHelvetia Residency Grant for South American Artists, held at La Becque Residence D’artistes, La Tour-de-Peilz, Switzerland. In the same year, he completed residencies at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in Singapore and ArtSonica – Oi Futuro Artistic Experimentation Laboratory, Rio de Janeiro. In 2018, he was nominated for the Pipa Prize, and in 2017, he was one of the winners of the ArtRio Foco Award. More recently, in 2024, he was selected for the 14th Mercosul Biennial, curated by Raphael Fonseca, taking place in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil, in April 2025.
He holds a postgraduate degree in Art and Contemporary Culture / Contemporary Artistic Processes from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), a Master’s in Visual Arts / Creation Processes and Poetics of the Everyday from the Federal University of Pelotas, and a Bachelor’s in Visual Arts from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS).
His works are part of important institutional collections, including: Museum of Art of Rio – Rio de Janeiro, RJ; Museum of Contemporary Art of Rio Grande do Sul – Porto Alegre, RS; and Aldo Locatelli Pinacotheca – Porto Alegre, RS.
